Pocasset Residents Push for Water Quality Improvements

BOURNE – Pocasset residents spoke out on Wednesday before Bourne selectmen on the quality of water at Hen Cove and Barlows Landing.

There currently is no circulation of salt water due to soil deposits in the salt marsh between Hen Cove and Barlows Landing, as well as a dam at Wings Neck.

Resident Frank Gasson has been leading the push for change and has called upon officials to act.

“I’d like to turn around and see if we can’t get back in here sometime, after you’ve had an opportunity to digest this, to see what you can turn around and do about this problem in an expeditious manner,” Gasson said.

Conservation Agent Sam Haines emphasized the importance of the waters.

“I certainly think that water quality is the number one issue in this town,” Haines said.

“I think our economy runs on it, I think it’s the reason people are here, is for our natural resource and our water quality.”

Haines said the process could be long and expensive. Notably, a culvert from Hen Cove to the salt marsh might be hard to accomplish due to the high water table. Also, the dam at Wings Neck is on private property, owned by the Bourne Conservation Trust.

The Board of Selectmen aims to have a plan of action ready by December.
