Local Organization to Send 1,500 Care Packages to Troops Serving Overseas

HYANNIS – What was started 11 years ago by a then 12-year-old Dylan DeSilva has turned into an annual tradition.

On Saturday, Cape Cod Cares for the Troops gathered at the former Sports Authority Building in Hyannis to assemble 1,000 care packages, which will be sent to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Those in attendance included a number of military families, patriotic residents, and a number of veterans, including one who was on the receiving end of a package just last year.

“He said he emptied his care package onto a table and the guys walked around and everybody got to take one thing until it was gone and he said it was like Christmas morning for them, they were all so excited,” said organizer Michelle DeSilva.

The group also intends to send an additional 500 care packages following the December rush, however with shipping costs exceeding $25,000, financial assistance is needed, and anyone looking to brighten the day of a troop serving overseas is encouraged to visit capecod4thetroops.com to donate.
