YARMOUTH – Several local “Green Communities” are receiving state funding for energy efficiency projects.

The towns of Harwich, Orleans, Wareham and Yarmouth were designated as green communities by the Department of Energy Resources last year.

The four towns will receive nearly $685,000 of the $1.3 million awarded by the state to eight Southeastern Massachusetts communities.

“We are proud to support the Green Communities program and the work it allows state and local governments to do in order to protect the environment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions through responsible clean energy policies,” said Governor Charlie Baker.

“Cities and towns that participate in the Green Commmunities program have access to additional resources that help facilitate investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects while reducing energy costs and carbon footprints.”

To become a green community, cities and towns commit to an ambitious renewable energy agenda to reduce energy consumption and emissions. Since the program began in 2010, 240 of the communities in the Commonwealth have received the designation. More than $100 million in grant funding has been awarded to those communities.
