Local Trade Group Wins Extension of Storm Disaster Declaration

CENTERVILLE – A local organization has succeeded in getting an extension on Cape Cod’s disaster declaration in the wake of the severe storms earlier this month.

The Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Cape Cod requested a one month extension on the declaration from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. The move will allow Cape Codders to conduct post-storm cleanup without having to go through the typically necessary permitting process.

The disaster declaration went into effect after the first March nor’easter and allows for the removal of objects and debris brought down by the storm. It also allows for the repairs and stabilization of buildings, foundations, and structures.

The declaration was set to expire on Monday, but will now stay in place until May 2.

“Our members, their subcontractors and their customers (home owners) have been working diligently to clean up after the early March nor’easter,” wrote Peter Kimball, the President of the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Cape Cod. “However, additional storms are adding to the clean-up work as well as hampering progress.”

The Department of Environmental Protection issued the declaration for dozens of coastal communities, including all of Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard.
