BOURNE – The crew of Air Station Cape Cod held a 40th anniversary memorial service last week in honor of the crew of Aircraft 1432, lost on February 18th, 1979.
The crew was dispatched to rescue a crewman aboard the Japanese fishing vessel Kaisei Maru during inclement weather, including seas of 20 feet.
During the rescue at 5 am, the chopper the crew was aboard lost power and fell into the sea.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Mark Torr was the only survivor.
Lost were Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Jim Stiles, Royal Canadian Air Force Captain George Burge, Petty Officer 2nd Class John Tait and Petty Officer 2nd Class Bruce Kaehler.
The well attended ceremony included a wreath laying.
