Love.Live.Local. Founders Create Video to Promote Small Businesses

HYANNIS – Three women who have been promoting the support of Cape Cod businesses have produced a video touting the importance of the cause.

Love.Live.Local. was started to raise awareness for all the mom and pop stores which make up about 90 percent of Cape Cod businesses and have helped to develop the character of the region.

The group has stressed the importance of shopping local for a few years through monthly emails and an informational graphic.

“This time we wanted to take it a step further and actually visually get people to see what could happen to Cape Cod if half or even more of small local businesses went away,” said Amanda Converse, one of the founders of Love.Live.Local. “If current trends continue it is not out of the realm of possibility.”

Converse said the more local residents and visitors shop at locally owned businesses the more money is recycled throughout the communities.

“What we want to encourage people to do is think local first when they are shopping for really anything,”

One of the initiatives of Love.Live.Local. is for each person to spend $50 at locally owned shop. If everyone spent that amount $4 million would go back into the local economy immediately.

Statistics show that more than 60 percent of the money spent at local businesses goes back into the local economy compared to just 25 percent when spent at big box stores and almost nothing when spent online.

“It’s about being mindful and it’s a great video because it does bring it out in the forefront,” said Elizabeth Wurfbain, the executive director of the Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District.

Wurfbain believes everyone on the Cape should be using the video and sharing it.

“It represents what all of the downtowns all of the main streets are feeling,” Wurfbain said. “Everybody is talking about the ramifications of the change in the economy and how people are shopping.”

Love.Live.Local. hosts Love Local Festivals across the Cape to promote local artists, artisans, farmers, food trucks, musicians and other independent makers.
