Low Vision Summit to Offer Eyesight Resources to Seniors

AgingSOUTH YARMOUTH – A free, public summit at Thirwood Place will offer vision-related resources to seniors next week.

The 2nd Annual Cape Cod Low Vision Summit for Seniors will take place on Thursday, June 9th and will feature multiple authorities on the subject.

Thirwood Place Director of Sales and Marketing Larry Lyford said that vision impairment is on the rise.

“For every one person on Cape Cod that is blind, there are at least three or four that have low vision,” he said. “So there’s a lot of help to be needed there.”

Attendees will be able to try out adaptive aids on display, courtesy of the founder of Adaptavision, who will be making a presentation.

Other presenters on the lineup include representatives from the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind, Perkins School Library, New England College of Optometry, Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission and more.

Lyford said that experts predict that by 2030, rates of vision loss will double along with the country’s aging population.

“People are living longer these days, and they’re living with eye impairments, so we thought it would be a very good idea to offer resources,” Lyford said.

The summit is open to the public and free but requires reservations. Those interested may do so at www.thirwoodplace.com/summit.
