Major Grant Awarded to C-O-MM for Firefighter Training

fire department patchCENTERVILLE – A grant from the Department of Homeland Security will help keep Barnstable firefighters safe.

US Congressmen Bill Keating (D-Bourne) helped secure $260,000 dollars for the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire Department.

Although the money was specifically awarded to C-O-M-M, the money will be used to train all firefighters from the 5 fire districts in Barnstable.

“We’ll be contracting with the Massachusetts Fire Academy to come down and provide this type of training and every firefighter within Barnstable will have the same knowledge for when they are placed in a position of saving themselves or saving one of their co-workers,” C-O-MM Fire Chief Michael Winn said.

Winn says that money will go towards training for a Rapid Intervention Team.

“Rapid Intervention Team is a  group of firefighters on a fire team whose sole mission is to protect the other firefighters on the same team. Almost a rescue group for the rescuers,” he said.

Keating, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, explained why he secured the funding.

“It is always important to recognize the great responsibilities that our firefighters bear each and every day,” said Keating.  “I know I speak for many when I say that I am thankful for the work our firefighters do to keep us safe. This funding will help the C-O-MM Fire Department in providing this vital service, and it is my honor to do what I can to help those who work so hard to protect us.”

Winn emphasized the importance of the grant.

“I want to thank the Congressional delegation for their continued support with this grant and the other federal initiatives we have benefitted from,” said Winn. “This grant will allow our department to provide our firefighters with the most up-to-date safety and self-rescue training available. Finding the resources to cover the overtime costs that trainings entail is a challenge for any department, and this grant will go a long way to meeting that challenge.”
