Major Renourishment Project Underway at Sandy Neck

Beach TracksBARNSTABLE – With winter storm season here, officials are taking emergency action to protect the fragile dunes at Sandy Neck.

Crews are working this week to renourish the beach. The one-week project will focus on the deteriorating dunes.

Over 4,000 cubic yards of sand is being laid on the dunes with the hope of preserving the dunes. The contractor is the Robert B. Our Company.

About 5,500 cubic yards of sand was used last year. Of that amount, 60 percent of the sand was lost through erosion from winter storms.

Sandy Neck Beach Park Manager Nina Coleman said that is only phase 1 of the project.

Coleman said the nourishment projects are paid for through the Sandy Neck enterprise account which comes from user fees to the park.
