‘Thanksgiving Baskets for Cape Codders’ Program Seeking Donations

HYANNIS – Community Action Committee of Cape Cod & the Islands is in the process of looking for people who would like to adopt a family and help make their Thanksgiving joyful.

“Last year, the Thanksgiving Baskets for Cape Codders program provided more than 200 Cape and Islands families with a basket filled with a turkey and all of the fixings,” said co-organizer and St. Mary’s Episcopal Church member Ron Bearse.

There are 3 ways to do it, all of which include all of the fixings.

If the participant wishes, they can also donate a $25 supermarket gift certificate or a 15-25 pound frozen turkey.

The fixings are one lb bag of potatoes or box of instant potatoes, one lb bag of carrots, two lbs of onions, 1 bunch of celery, 1 butternut squash, 1 can of green beans, 1 can of peas, 1 can of sweet potatoes, 1 box of seasoned stuffing, 1 can of cranberry sauce, 2 jars of gravy or a packaged mix, and, of course, 1 pie mix (apple or pumpkin) and box pie crust or 1 fresh pie.

Bearse said potential donors should, “Close your eyes for a few seconds and imagine a needy family digging into a delicious and nutritious Thanksgiving meal that you provided for them.”

The baskets will also be decorated with Thanksgiving Greeting signs that children will create.

Community Action Committee of Cape Cod and the Islands has done this program for the last 12 years.

St. Mary’s Episcopal Church on Rt. 6A in Barnstable Village, has partnered with the Action Committee and been  involved with the project for the last 8 years.

There are many community partners like the Centerville Civic Association and The Hyannis Harbor Hawks.

For more information, including the locations where and when baskets and donations can be dropped off, can be found at the Community Action Committee’s website www.cacci.cc or by calling Collin Mickle at 508-771-1717.
