Man Accused in Funeral Break-Ins Held Until Next Court Appearance

BARNSTABLE – A man accused of breaking into the homes of people attending funerals is still being held ahead of a probable cause hearing later this month.

Randy Brunelle, 35, of Plymouth, appeared in Barnstable District Court this week for a pre-trial hearing. He will return to court on March 29.

Brunelle was arrested in February after allegedly breaking into a home in Cotuit while the homeowner was attending her mother’s funeral.

He spent 18 months in prison for a similar crime in 2012 in Sandwich. Brunelle was found guilty of breaking into a Sandwich police officer’s mother’s home while the officer was attending her funeral.

Plymouth police were able to tie Brunelle to a fingerprint left at the scene, leading to his arrest and conviction.

Police say Brunelle is suspected of using the same modus operandi as he did in the 2012 Plymouth case by preying on people who are attending the wakes and funerals of loved ones.

In addition to the Cotuit case, Brunelle is also charged in connection with a break-in at two homes in Osterville. Police say the incidents in September and December happened while widows were attending funeral services for their late husbands.
