HYANNIS – A 35-year-old Hyannis man is in custody today after allegedly breaking into boats at Hyannis Harbor.

Police received a report just after 2:00 this morning of the activity and located Jeffrey Alten.

The witness, an assistant harbormaster for the Town of Barnstable, was able to provide a description of the suspect as well as record video of him on his cell phone before the suspect fled the area.

Officer Troy Perry located the suspect a short distance from the harbor on South Street with a can of beer he had taken from one of the boats.

According to Investigating Officer Joseph Green, Alten had entered two different boats in the harbor, and one of them was occupied. The couple that was sleeping inside of the boat did not wake up until police alerted them to the break in.

Jeffrey Alten was charged with two counts of felony breaking and entering into a vessel, and larceny of property under $250.

He was held at the Barnstable Police Department overnight and then transported to Barnstable District Court for arraignment this morning.
