FALMOUTH – The pregnant Manatee who was found in waters off of Cape Cod in August is now in the waters off of the Bahamas.
Scientists from the Sea to Shore Alliance and the Bahamas Marine Mammal Research Organization were able to track her journey from Florida to the Bahamas.
It’s the first time they have been able to do so with a manatee.
“As the number of manatees slowly increases, environmental conditions change, and public awareness of manatees rises, we have been seeing Florida manatees show up in unusual places like Massachusetts, the Bahamas and Cuba,” said Monica Ross, a research scientists for Sea to Shore Alliance.
“Our tracking study is investigating where manatees go when they leave Florida and what areas unknown to us are important to them. Washburn is proving to be a particularly interesting manatee for this study; she definitely has us on our toes wondering where she’ll go next.”
Rescuers from the International Fund for Animal Welfare rescued Washburn from waters off Falmouth in September and she was transported to Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut.
