CHATHAM – Now that school is out and summer is here, the Marconi-RCA Wireless Museum is inviting members of the public to take part in their latest exhibit.
The museum, located at the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center, is presenting “Chatham Heard Round the World” a look into one of the world’s pioneering radio transmission stations located right on Cape.
The exhibit’s centerpiece is one of the station’s 17 large RCA model SSB T-3 20-kiloWatt transmitters. Reportedly, the electrical power needed to send long-distance radio signals through these transmitters was so great that it would sometimes cause the lights around South Chatham to flicker.
Visitors will experience firsthand how a radio operator touching a Morse code key in Chatham could be heard by his counterparts aboard ships sailing the seven seas – long before satellite networks – and learn about the talented and skilled people who conceived, built and operated the South Chatham facility.
