Maria Mitchell Association Announces ‘Open Nights’ Fall Schedule

NANTUCKET – Residents and visitors on Nantucket will have the opportunity to explore the nighttime fall skies over the island this fall.

The Maria Mitchell Association has announced the fall schedule for its Open Nights at the Loines Observatory.

Two Open Nights will be held each month from through November to allow the public to look through the refurbished historic 8-inch Clark telescope and the state-of-the-art 24-inch research telescope.

Professional astronomers will be on hand to highlight interesting objects in the night sky and provide constellation tours.

The Open Nights are September 25th and 26th from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m, October 23rd and 24th from 7 to 8 p.m. and November 27th and 28th from 7 to 8 p.m.

Admission for the event is $10, and free for association members.

When the telescopes are not open to the public they are used to conduct astronomical research by the association’s staff, visiting astronomers and summer interns.
