NANTUCKET – The Maria Mitchell Association on Nantucket has a new field ornithologist.
Virginia “Ginger” Andrews, the daughter of acclaimed ornithologist Edith Andrews, has joined the organization and will lead two bird walks every week throughout the summer and will offer both in-town and out-of-town programs.
Participants will have the opportunity to view the Association’s “Edith F. Andrews Bird Ornithology” to enhance the learning experience.
Ginger pens a weekly column in the Nantucket Inquirer and Mirror called “Island Bird Sightings” which demonstrates her knowledge on the animal, according the Association’s Executive Director David Gagnon.
She also participates in the Nantucket and Muskeget Christmas Bird Counts.
Along with the walks, Ginger and the association are offering private bird watching excursions for individuals and small groups.
Professor Richard Veit from the College of Staten Island says Ginger comes from an exceptional background of Nantucket natural history and is continuing the line of distinguished and independent women scientists for which the island is famous.
The association is named after Maria Mitchell, America’s first female astronomer, and operates two observatories, an aquarium and a natural science museum.
