Maria Mitchell Foundation Expands Food Program

NANTUCKET – Over the last three years, the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association has established Giving Garden as part of its Summer Discovery Programs for children and teenagers. The Green Guardians, is a community service program for 10-12 year olds and the Community Service and Ecology Natural Leadership Program is designed for 13-16 year olds.

Each year, participants have helped grow, harvest and deliver fresh vegetables and upcycled t shirt bags to the Nantucket Food Bank.

This year the MMA was able to significantly increase production. A grant from Cape Cod Five Cents Charitable Foundation allowed the MMA to purchase and install fencing, raised beds, more seeds and seedlings and install light barriers to control weeds.

“I am very proud of the time and effort our staff and campers put into this important programwith great result. Not only did they learn about gardening but they learned about the importance of giving back to our community,” said David Gagnon, the Maria Mitchell Association’s Executive Director.

The Maria Mitchell Association is a private non-profit organization founded in 1902.
