Marine Ecologist to Lecture at Sea Education Center in Falmouth

FALMOUTH – Sea Education Association will host a public lecture, “How Protecting Local Marine Resources Affects the Global Oceans,” on Sunday, October 8, at 2 p.m.

Heidi Weiskel, Marine Ecologist and Staff Scientist at the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide, will deliver the lecture.

The lecture will be held at James L. Madden Center Lecture Hall, at the Sea Education Center in Falmouth.

It is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

The lecture will address ways in which local legal protection efforts influence global marine issues such as fisheries, aquaculture, offshore oil and gas development, and climate change, as well as how coastal environmental justice is becoming an important component of marine resource management.

Dr. Weiskel will draw on her experience with communities around the world, including Trinidad, Morocco, and India, and locally here in New England.

Dr. Weiskel is the former Director of Pollution Policy at the Pew Oceans Commission.

She worked on marine mammal protection policy at the U.S. Marine Mammal Commission, and served as an environmental research fellow at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.

As Staff Scientist at ELAW, she provides support for public interest environmental attorneys working to protect the environment and local communities from harmful developments.
