Marshfield Republican Tom O’Malley is running for the Massachusetts 9th Congressional seat held by Democrat incumbent William Keating.
BARNSTABLE – Marshfield republican Tom O’Malley has thrown his hat in the ring for the Massachusetts 9th Congressional seat.
O’Malley, who served in the US Navy for over 30 years in active and reserve roles and later worked for American Airlines and PanAm Shuttle, launched his campaign on January 20.
“I’m not a Tea Party guy. I’m a center-right candidate,” O’Malley said.
O’Malley said the top issues he would address are immigration and the military.
In a press release announcing his candidacy, O’Malley said “the current administration has weakened our military as well as loosened the laws of immigration.”
O’Malley said he was inspired to get into the race after seeing what direction the country had been headed over the last couple of years, along with the inability of Washington to get anything done.
O’Malley said he brings a different view of the world to the campaign than his republican primary opponent Mark Alleigro.
“I’ve worked in real life. I’ve made life and death decisions. I’ve negotiated contracts in business so I know there has to be a give and take,” O’Malley said. “I haven’t been in a classroom my entire career.”
O’Malley does not believe incumbent democrat William Keating has done a good enough job during his tenure in Congress.
“He’s voted almost lockstep with the Obama administration which I think has been a detriment to the administration,” he said.
O’Malley said he has talked with small business owners and fishermen who are not happy with the performance of their Congressional representative.
“Keating also voted in favor of the Iran nuclear deal which is a disaster for this country,” O’Malley said. “We have turned loose billions of dollars of cash to a nation that we have declared a state sponsor or terrorism.”
O’Malley knows he has work to do to reach out to residents on the Cape and Islands.
“I intend to get over there and meet people and see people and get the face known to get the name out there,” he said. “It’s a lot of work without a doubt but that’s what we are here for.”
O’Malley, Alleigro, and possible Independent candidate Allan Waters are the candidates who are looking to take the seat from Keating.
The state primary election is September 8.
