Mashpee Community Raising Funds to Purchase Service Dog for Vet

Scout is a Service Dog trained through resources from Heroes In Transition

MASHPEE – Heroes in Transition and the Willowbend Community in Mashpee are raising funds to provide a service dog for a local veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder.

The organizations have raised 75 percent of the funds needed to pay for the dog.

Willowbend fundraising organizer Denise Holzman says these dogs can really make a difference for vets in need.

“These are people that may not be able to go out in public when they come back. They can’t even go to the mall or to a store,” Holzman said. “These dogs assist them and calm them down in certain situations when they find themselves traumatized or unable to do the activities of daily living.”

A Turkey Trot fun run event was held yesterday to help with the fundraising effort.

“We are on our way to getting this dog,” Holzman said. “And if we do get him, we have been told that we can name him Willow after the Willowbend Community, so we like that.”

Donations can be made by check made out to “Heroes in Transition” and mailed to C/O Willowbend Fitness, 110 Willowbend Drive, Mashpee, MA 02649.
