Mashpee Offers Free Beach Passes to Local Vets

MASHPEE – Military veterans living in the Town of Mashpee will soon be able to enjoy the local beaches free of charge.

The Town Clerk’s Office has finalized design plans for the new placards which will allow former military members access to access beaches and lakes without typical admission costs.

The move is described as an effort to show gratitude to members of the community who have served in the military.

“A resident of Mashpee went to the board of selectmen and made a presentation, the selectmen embraced it,” said Mashpee Town Clerk Deborah Dami, “So hopefully by the end of April we should be ready to start putting them together and then we’ll have them ready to give out the first of June.”

The town will begin by printing 2,000 of the passes, offered to full-time residents of Mashpee, who must present a DD214 Discharge Form under Honorable Conditions.

The Heroes in Transition, a local non-profit supporting veterans, has been a proponent of the effort, providing the clerk’s office with roughly $3,500 in equipment needed to produce the placards.

Town officials expect to lose approximately $30,000 in annual beach sticker sales when the free veterans’ passes become available but say that it is a small price to pay to show appreciation to local vets.
