MASHPEE – The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe is breaking ground Tuesday on a resort casino in Taunton.

The federally recognized tribe has scheduled a kick off ceremony at an industrial park that’s the future site of its First Light Resort and Casino.

The Mashpee tribe is developing the estimated $1 billion project with the Genting Group, a Malaysia-based company signed on to operate the casino.

The tribe envisions a sprawling complex with a casino, three hotel towers, retail stores, restaurants and a water park. The property is part of the tribe’s newly designated federal reservation.

The project is expected to open in part by 2017. It represents Massachusetts’ third resort casino in development: MGM is building one in Springfield and Wynn has another in the Boston area.

The state gaming commission is still considering whether it should approve another casino in Brockton. If it does, the Mashpee tribe would not be required to make payments to the state that are part of the compact between the Wampanoag and the Commonwealth.

Proponents of the Brockton plan are trying to challenge the federal government’s land-into-trust approval that allowed for the Taunton casino plan to move forward.
