Mashpee Wampanoag to Host Thanksgiving Unity Event Today in Boston

BOSTON – The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe will host a modern day Thanksgiving Unity Reception today at the State House in Boston.

The event is an effort to promote peace and unity for all Americans.

Attendees will include legislative, community and religious leaders and will be co-hosted by 3rd Barnstable State Representative David Vieira (R-Falmouth).

“There’s so much hate and divisiveness engulfing the country and as the direct descendants of the first Americans, we wanted to host a 21st century  Thanksgiving reception to remind the world that the only path to peace and prosperity is one that includes all people,” said Cedric Cromwell, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Council chairman.

Wampanoag ancestors hosted the first Thanksgiving with the Pilgrims in 1621.

“We want to encourage everyone to recommit to the positive dialogue and alliance that began right here with our ancestors nearly 400 years ago,” Cromwell said.

Vieira said it’s the right time and place for the event.

“Once again, the Wampanoag Tribe is paving the way toward understanding and peace and I am proud to play a role in that,” Vieira said.

The reception is at 11 a.m. in the Great Hall at the State House.

November is Native American Awareness Month in Massachusetts.
