MASHPEE – The executive assistant of the Mashpee Wampanoag Gaming Commission was one of two people arrested and charged with heroin possession this week in Yarmouth.

The tribe’s website lists Philip Earl Cash, 30, as one of the commission’s three members.

He was arrested after being pulled over Monday afternoon for an expired inspection sticker. During the traffic stop, Yarmouth police say a drug-sniffing dog detected the drugs.

A small amount of heroin was also allegedly found on Cash.

A statement from a tribal spokesman said they were “shocked and saddened” to hear about the allegations.

“Each Gaming Commission member is subject to a thorough background check and is well aware there is a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to allegations of substance abuse,” said George Regan on behalf of the tribe.

The statement said Cash previously had a “spotless” record with no criminal history to their knowledge.

“However, given the serious nature of the allegations, the Gaming Commission was obliged to suspend him without pay, pending the outcome of the investigation,” Regan said.

The Mashpee tribe is working on a plan to build a $500 million casino resort in Taunton.

Carolyn Carpinella, 30, of Falmouth, was also arrested with Cash and charged with heroin possession.

Both were released on personal recognizance this week after their arraignments in Barnstable District Court. They’ll return for a pre-trial on Nov. 3.

  1. Their “tribal” comission thinks they can run a clean, safe, and drug free casino, but can’t keep their own comics ion members from dealing with heroin? This is just the beginning if we let these mobsters in headresses open and operate a casino.

  2. That comment above speaks for itself. I pray for “Jason.”

  3. Remember Glenn Marshall, the tribal leader? He is now serving time in prison for embezzlement, among other charges. How is a casino the pancia for The People Of The First Light? The whole thing is so ripe for amazingly bad things………………

  4. This whole thing is bullshit addiction has the ability to touch everyone no matter what size shape or color.. Im excited for the casino, I hope this all blows over for this good kind hearted man I’d hate to see this man’s future and career ruined over something like this..
