MASHPEE – Selectmen in Mashpee are weighing a proposal to hike residential beach stickers as costs associated with beach management continue to rise.
The town’s Recreation Director Mary Bradbury recently appeared before the board to request the change, citing recent and impending increases in wages, trash removal, and facilities maintenance.
The town currently collects roughly $114,000 in sticker fees and spends roughly $80,000. Bradbury contends that costs will soon soar to near $100,000 and may continue to grow.
The plan calls for an increase in from $30 to $35, while keeping the current non-resident beach sticker fee unchanged at $50 per week.
Selectman Andrew Gotlieb told the board that any increase in fees should be shared by all beach users, not just residents.
“I’d be interested in seeing what the overall cost the operation is,” he explained.
“And then maybe look at sharing the cost of the operation equitably or the increase in the cost the operation equitably among the two categories of users rather just assigning it solely to the resident.”
The board will continue their discussion on the matter at their meeting Monday night.
