HYANNIS – A local organization which has been raising money for two decades to help hospitality industry workers is holding one of its largest fundraisers this weekend.

The Art Westfall Foundation is hosting its second Best of Cape Cod “Masquerade” Bartender’s Ball Sunday at 7:30 at the Resort and Conference Center in Hyannis.

Board member Ed Miles says the foundation just tries to help people out.

“We are not able to pay all their medical bills or all of their bills but we try to help them out a little bit to get them through whatever crisis they are in,” Miles said. “It could be rent. It could be a car payment. It could be whatever.”

The foundation started 21 years ago when Arthur Westfall, the general manager of the former Pufferbellies, was diagnosed with terminal cancer at the age of 49.

He did not have health insurance, like many hospitality workers at the time.

Friends, family members and other in the industry joined together to hold a party to raise money to help cover medical expenses.

Westfall died after his 50th birthday party and his friends assured him they would continue to assist others who found themselves in similar circumstances.

Since the foundation began it has helped more than 100 individuals and organizations.

“If somebody gets hurt and they can’t work for a few months, a bartender and waitress rely on their tips,” said Deb Morgan, another foundation board member. “When they aren’t working they aren’t getting any income whatsoever. Even if they do have health insurance they’re still not able to get income to help pay their bills.”

The inaugural event last year had more than 500 attendees.

The ball features a casino, a psychic, music and a live auction.

Tickets are $75 and can be purchased at Seaside Pub on Main, Tap City Grille, Trader Ed’s and online at www.ccbartendersball.eventbrite.com.
