YARMOUTH – Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School students gathered on Friday to hear from the Massachusetts Fallen Heroes statewide educational initiative.

The organization, along with Gold Star Family member Yarmouth Police Deputy Chief Steven Xiarhos, educated the students about the sacrifices made by servicemen and women since 9/11.

“These families, the Xiarhos family and all the other families of the fallen, every day is Memorial Day, so it’s remembered every day, not just certain days,” said Massachusetts Fallen Heroes Executive Director Dan Magoon.

Xiarhos, the father of D-Y High School graduate Nicholas G. Xiarhos who died in the line of duty in 2009, talked to students about losing his son and how important it is to encompass the traits of honor, service, sacrifice and character.

A student also made a video at the school that honored Xiarhos with pictures and videos of him.

Deputy Chief Xiarhos said that he hopes the students were able to learn a lot from the presentation.

“The cost of freedom, but maybe they can today see the pain, the toll it takes on the families and the strength that we need to carry on and keep helping others,” said Xiarhos.
