Mass Maritime Academy Hosts Change of Command Ceremony

Mass Maritime - 1BUZZARDS BAY – Over 1,000 people are expected in Buzzards Bay this afternoon as the Massachusetts Maritime Academy conducts its annual Change of Command ceremony.

The ceremony is where senior cadets assume regimental leadership positions, including the top cadet, which is also known as the regimental commander.

“It’s a big event for the campus, probably the top two or three most exciting events for the year,” said Mass Maritime Academy President Fran McDonald.

Following the ceremony, the academy will unveil the 125th anniversary exhibit in their ABS Commons building.

The exhibit features a display of photos and artifacts that were gathered over the 125 years of the academy.

“It’s a very significant event for us,” said McDonald. “Back in 1891, through a Massachusetts general legislation, state law that started the academy in the first place.”
