OFF THE COAST OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – The T.S. Kennedy was tracked off the coast of the Dominican Republic this week as this year’s Sea Term continues.
600 cadets from Mass Maritime are onboard the vessel for the annual Sea Term. The two-month voyage allows students to put into practice what they have been learning at the academy from one semester to three and ½ years.
During the trip cadets will rotate through class and laboratory training, handle ship operations and perform maintenance and emergency drills.
Early Monday morning, cadets made a humanitarian aid drop in Haiti. Ports of call for this year’s voyage include Barbados, Jamaica, Colombia, and Tampa, Florida.
The Kennedy is scheduled to arrive in Colombia on Friday, according to Captain Michael Campbell, who is in his second year at the helm of Sea Term.
Over the weekend, the cadets took part in a series of anchoring drills and tests. On Sunday, students were given the day off to enjoy an afternoon on the deck. It was 85 degrees and sunny.
The T.S. Kennedy is scheduled to return to Buzzards Bay on February 25.
