CARTAGENA, Colombia – The T.S. Kennedy has reached its first port-of-call after nearly 2 weeks at sea since departing Buzzards Bay earlier this month.

The Kennedy docked in Colombia on Friday, giving students from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy an opportunity to get off the ship and explore the port.

600 cadets from Mass Maritime are onboard the vessel for the annual Sea Term. The two-month voyage allows students to put into practice what they have been learning at the academy from one semester to three and ½ years.

During the trip cadets will rotate through class and laboratory training, handle ship operations and perform maintenance and emergency drills.

The Kennedy will depart Colombia Monday for its next port-of-call: Bridgetown, Barbados.

The third stop was scheduled to be Jamaica, but Captain Michael Campbell has announced that the Kennedy will instead dock at St. Thomas instead. No reason was provided for the change in plans.

The final port of call before the Kennedy returns to Buzzards Bay in February is Tampa, Florida.

As part of the trip, cadets dropped off humanitarian supplies in Haiti.
