CARVER – The Massachusetts Teachers Association has endorsed State Rep. candidate Sarah Hewins in the race for the 2nd Plymouth District seat.
Hewins, a Democrat and a Carver selectman, is challenging incumbent Republican representative Susan Williams-Gifford of Wareham for the spot on Beacon Hill.
In issuing their recommendation, officials with the MTA said Hewins would be a “strong voice for working families and communities.”
“Sarah Hewins will be a compelling advocate in the Legislature for students and public education,” MTA President Barbara Madeloni said. “When meeting with educators, Sarah clearly articulated her commitment to our public schools, colleges and universities.
“The MTA has my full support,” Hewins said. “Having grown up poor and transient, public schools were my lifeline. My mother always stressed the importance of education, and I worked my way through college and a doctorate. That would not have been possible without the help of many talented and caring teachers along the way. Anyone who has worked alongside teachers in our public schools knows what a gift they are to our children, our society, and our democracy”
The 2nd Plymouth District includes Carver, Wareham, and parts of Middleboro.
