BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts delegates to the Republican National Convention are navigating choppy political waters as they trek to Cleveland to select Donald Trump as the GOP’s presidential nominee.
Their party’s figurehead back home — Gov. Charlie Baker — is not only skipping the convention, he’s the only Republican governor in the country who’s publicly said he won’t even vote for Trump.
But delegates like state Rep. Geoff Diehl said some party leaders appear out of touch with rank-and-file Republican voters.
Another delegate, former state party chairman Bob Maginn, backed Florida Sen. Marco Rubio during the campaign, but believes Trump would be a vast improvement over Hillary Clinton.
Nearly half of Republican voter in Massachusetts backed the New York businessman during the primary.
The convention begins Monday.
