Massachusetts High Court Chief to Deliver State of Judiciary

BOSTON (AP) — The chief justice of Massachusetts’ highest court is set to give his annual update on issues facing the courts and criminal justice system.

Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Ralph Gants will deliver his State of the Judiciary address Wednesday at the John Adams Courthouse in Boston.

Gants was sworn in as the 37th chief justice in 2014. Before becoming a judge, he served as an assistant U.S. attorney in Massachusetts and led the office’s public corruption unit.

In last year’s speech, Gants discussed such issues as criminal justice reform and the shortage of attorneys to represent parents and children in cases when the state removes a child from parental custody.

Others expected to speak include Massachusetts Bar Association President Christopher Kennedy and Massachusetts Trial Court Chief Justice Paul Carey.
