BOSTON (AP) — The Massachusetts House has approved a bill that would allow unions representing public workers to charge non-members costs associated with representing them through the grievance process.
The bill approved Wednesday is a response to a 2018 5-4 Supreme Court ruling that found government workers can’t be forced to contribute to labor unions.
The ruling scrapped a 41-year-old decision that allowed states to require public employees pay some fees to unions that represent them, even if the workers choose not to join.
Democratic House Speaker Robert DeLeo said the bill shows Massachusetts will work to secure protections for working men and women.
The conservative Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance said the bill would give unions more power over state workers and access to personal contact information.
The bill heads to the Massachusetts Senate.
