Massachusetts Leaders Hopeful but Cautious on Economy

massachusetts state houseBOSTON (AP) — There are reasons for state leaders to feel upbeat about the state’s current fiscal and economic health, but also reasons for caution.

Tax collections are running ahead of projections so far in the fiscal year and the state’s jobless rate remains below the U.S. as a whole.

Economists for MassBenchmarks, a journal published by the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute at the University of Massachusetts, wrote this week that the state was continuing a robust expansion.

Yet the report also contained red flags. It noted that Massachusetts was not immune from weaknesses in the global economy, and also pointed to disparities in wage growth that have many families struggling to make ends meet.

House Speaker Robert DeLeo says he’s encouraged by the state’s overall fiscal position.
