Massachusetts Lottery Profits Exceed Expectations

MoneyBRAINTREE, Mass. (AP) — The Massachusetts State Lottery made an estimated $983.5 million in profits and outperformed expectations during the just ended fiscal year, the last it won’t face competition from casinos.

State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg announced Tuesday that final profits for the year that ended June 30 were $35.7 million higher than forecast.

The lottery for the first time had more than $5 billion in sales, the fourth consecutive year of record-setting sales. More than $3.4 billion was awarded as prizes.

Goldberg said the numbers were driven largely by sales of $20 and $30 instant scratch-off tickets and increased Keno sales.

Lottery profits are returned to cities and towns in the form of unrestricted aid.

The state’s first casino, Plainridge Park slots parlor in Plainville, opened in late June. Two resort casinos have been approved.
