UNDATED (AP) – Officials say a Massachusetts man who was detained for 40 days in Iran has been released and is heading home.
Thirty-year-old Matthew Trevithick, of Hingham, was released Saturday.
His release was independent of a prisoner exchange between the United States and Iran where four other U.S. prisoners were also discharged.
Trevithick’s family said in a statement he went to Iran in September for a four-month language program at an institute associated with Tehran University. They said he was held for 40 days in Evin Prison, but gave no reason for his detention.
His family says they’re “profoundly grateful” for his release. They declined to comment further.
Trevithick is the co-founder of SREO, a humanitarian crisis research center.
His website says he attended Boston University.
