Massachusetts Tax Revenue Ticks Up, But Still Below Estimate

BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts tax collections have picked up a bit.

The state took in more than $2.7 billion in revenue last month. That’s $189 million, or 7.4 percent, more than September of last year.

It’s also $26 million above the monthly benchmark. September is typically a large tax collection month.

Despite the uptick, revenues overall are still $11 million below predictions for the first quarter of the fiscal year which began July 1 and ended Sept. 30.

Revenue Commissioner Michael Heffernan said Wednesday some of the September recovery “reflects one-time events.”

Baker must notify lawmakers by Oct. 15 if he intends to revise downward the current $26.2 billion fiscal year tax revenue estimate.

That estimate was already downgraded by more than $600 million in June, before passage of the current state budget.
