Massachusetts Unemployment Rate Down to 4.2 Percent in April

unemploymentBOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts’ jobs outlook is continuing to improve.

The state unemployment rate dropped to 4.2 percent in April. That’s down from the March rate of 4.4 percent.

The Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development said Thursday that preliminary job estimates show Massachusetts added nearly 14,000 jobs in April. Last month’s gain follows March’s revised gain of 6,600 jobs. So far this year, Massachusetts has added 35,600 jobs.

Massachusetts’ April unemployment rate remains lower than the national rate of 5 percent reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate is based on a monthly sample of households. The job estimates are derived from a monthly sample survey of employers.
