HYANNIS – The state Department of Transportation has awarded over $800,000 in grants to support four rural intercity bus carrier routes for one year.

The grants, which are funded by the Federal Transit Administration, are designed to provide regional connections for rural communities by supporting intercity bus routes serving communities like Hyannis and Provincetown.

The Plymouth and Brockton bus liner were awarded $270,000 for their Hyannis to Provincetown route.

Transportation officials said that the award recipients were chosen based on projected annual ridership, financial capability and net operating deficit.

Routes were selected through a competitive process that was informed by MassDOT’s recently completed Regional Bus Network Assessment.
