SANDWICH – Route 6 was the scene of long delays this morning as a state paving project in the eastbound lanes combined with morning sun glare resulted in several crashes.
Crashes between exits 2 and 3 resulted in the closing of the highway and drivers were rerouted along the Service Road. Exit 2 eastbound reopened at about 8 a.m. But another crash between exits 1 and 2 resulted in more delays which are ongoing this morning.
The paving contractor working for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation had planned to close the right travel lane in the eastbound direction on Route 6 for final paving beginning last night at 7 p.m. and continuing today until 3 p.m.
The closure on one lane eastbound begins at exit 2 and extends east to the Barnstable town line. The closure was in effect overnight and until approximately 3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13.
Because of the weather forecast for Friday, MassDOT elected to consolidate te work to Wednesday and Thursday in order to complete paving on the main line of Route 6 in the eastbound direction.
Paving is weather and temperature sensitive: dry air and temperatures consistently above freezing are required in order for pavement to properly cure.
Additional paving is still required on various ramps that will be done at a later date and as temperatures permit.
