DENNIS – Officials with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) have confirmed that Old Bass River Road Bridge in Dennis will remain closed, pending further analysis of the bridge.
The bridge, which extends above Route 6, was damaged in a traffic accident last Friday.
A flat-bed truck carrying a crane struck the bridge while traveling on the highway, sending one person to the hospital with unknown injuries.
Since then, crews conducted a comprehensive structural assessment of the bridge and are currently conducting an engineering analysis of that assessment.
MassDOT officials say that they are looking to identify options to partially or fully open the bridge to traffic, if it’s deemed feasible by the analysis, which is expected to be completed this week.
An initial field inspection of the bridge found that two of the bridge beams were severed.
Full repairs to the bridge will be challenging, according to MassDOT, due to the bridge structure being comprised of steel reinforced concrete beams, restrictions due to winter weather conditions and the close proximity to the Route 134, exit 9 interchange.
