MassDOT Holds Public Meeting in Hyannis on Capital Investment Plan

massdotHYANNIS – State transportation officials held their Capital Investment Plan public meeting Wednesday at the Hyannis Transportation Center.

The five year, $14.4 billion plan includes $2 billion to address structurally deficient bridges and more spending on improvements to existing infrastructure and less on new projects.

The plan also includes a number of projects for the Cape.

Around $6.9 million would be spent on intersection improvements at Iyanough Road and Yarmouth Road in Barnstable and $8.2 million would be allocated for corridor improvements on the Nathan Ellis Highway in Mashpee.

Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority Administrator Tom Cahir was glad to have the state transportation officials stop in Hyannis in their series of meetings throughout the state.

“It’s a great opportunity for people that are respected in our communities to provide testimony as to what they think are important in terms of the precious resources we receive from federal and state government,” said Cahir.

Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce CEO Wendy Northcross, Barnstable Town Councilor James Crocker, Association to Preserve Cape Cod Executive Director Ed DeWitt and Cape Cod Commission Technical Services Director Glenn Cannon attended the meeting.

MassDOT also highlighted investments in the community that includes $7.3 million towards the Cape Cod Rail Trail Extension, and over $20 million in improvements at Barnstable Airport.

The state has also allocated over $8 million in the plan to the CCRTA towards a new administrative building, support vehicles and bus shelters.

“There are a number of issues on the Cape, Barnstable County is 400 square miles and there’s only so much money that goes around so we want to make sure that we invest wisely and we do so in a timely fashion,” said Cahir.
