MassDOT Issues Holiday Travel Advisory

HYANNIS – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is encouraging travelers to plan ahead this holiday season.

Free coffee will be available at 18 service centers, including the Route 6 Eastbound Rest Area on Saturday and December 31.

Registry of Motor Vehicles offices will be closed on December 26 and January 2 and the MBTA will offer free service on New Year’s Eve after 8 p.m.

“We want everyone to reach their travel destinations safely and enjoy this holiday with their friends and loved ones,” said Transportation Secretary and CEO Stephanie Pollack. “Drivers should minimize distractions, stay sober and have a designated driver, and the MBTA will offer free service on all modes of transportation New Year’s Eve, to encourage travelers to make smart choices when celebrating.”

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports that some normally scheduled maintenance-related activities will be suspended on upcoming weekdays, specifically so that all travel lanes on the Cape Cod Canal’s Sagamore and Bourne bridges will be open Friday through Monday, January 2.

The High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane on I-93 between Boston and Quincy will have normal morning hours and will extend its hours to be open from 1 p.m., to 8 p.m., on Friday and Friday, December 30.

The HOV lane will be closed on the designated state holidays, Monday, December 26, and Monday, January 2.
