HYANNIS – Joan Rezendes, director of Business Services for Career Opportunities, and Laura Rosko, program director for the mature workers program at Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands.

Career Opportunities looks to help people find jobs “In the past year, we have found that many employers are having a difficult time filling the jobs. They’ve come to us and we’re strived to find the right candidates for them and many times it’s been very, very difficult.

In the meantime, in talking with Roskos at Elder Services, “we knew we had a potential workforce that might help fill some of the voids that the employers are experiences.

A partnership was born.

Roskos said the labor market is part of what’s driving the growth in the workforce over 55, which has increased by a third on the Cape and Islands in the last 10 years. It is now over 30 percent of people working on Cape Cod are over 55.

“Some of it is also driven by changes in the way people are aging. Our health is better. Our life span is longer. There’s more time we have to fill. And a lot of people experience financial need,” she said.

An Experienced (Older Job Seeker) Boot Camp is scheduled for tomorrow, October 22, from 9 am to 2 pm. at Career Opportunities, 373 North Street, Hyannis.

The Experienced (Older) Worker Job Fair is scheduled for Thursday, October 29, from noon to 3 p.m., also at Career Opportunities.
