Mayflower Beach Bathhouse Design Presented to Selectmen

DENNIS – Plans for a new bathhouse at Mayflower Beach in Dennis could be loosely modeled after its namesake.

Designs were presented to selectmen last week by an architectural firm in an effort to get construction and funding articles before voters at town meeting.

“Almost 400 years ago this is where the Mayflower touched the shore,” said Brian Humes, an architect with Jacunski Humes Architects based in Berlin, Connecticut. “So we wanted to utilize this in a concept for a solution.”

The plans include two buildings separated by an area covered by umbrellas resembling a mast.

“It’s a very simplistic design. It just meets the program needs,” Humes said. “But I thinks it’s done in a way that is whimsical. It’s educational. It’s fun and it speaks to the character and it speaks to the reference of the site.”

Selectmen said they need more time to consider the proposal and its $1.1 million price tag.

The town was notified in June of 2015 by the Board of Health that the septic system of the current bathhouse had failed.

Dennis originally had until June of this year to install a new system, but Director of Beaches and Recreation Dustin Pineau recently requested an extension through June of 2018.

Town meeting voters approved $100,000 for the design and engineering for a new bathhouse in October of 2015.

Funds for the project would come from the town’s Beach Improvement Fund. The fund is generated from a percentage of the parking passes and resident stickers sold.
