Mayflower II Returns to Plymouth Next Week

mayflower22PLYMOUTH – The replica of the ship that brought the Pilgrims to the New World is returning home after spending the winter in Mystic, Connecticut.

The Mayflower II, which is turning 60 years old soon, is returning to Plymouth after having some work on its half deck done and other repairs at the Mystic Seaport’s Henry B. DuPont Preservation Shipyard.

“People miss her when she’s gone, she is essential to the waterfront and the shop owners are really excited to have her back,” said Plimoth Plantation spokesperson Kate Sheehan. “Our visitors and guests are excited to have her back, and we know that she will be well received when she comes home.”

The ship will leave Mystic under tow on Sunday and will spend one night in New Bedford before making its way through the Cape Cod Canal on Monday and into Plymouth Harbor.

It’s expected that the ship will be traveling through the Cape Cod Canal between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

The ship will return to Mystic in December for more repairs and will be there for 30 months in preparation of Plymouth’s 400th anniversary celebration in 2020.

“Mayflower II is an essential exhibit of Plimoth Plantation and she’s also an economic and cultural anchor in the Plymouth waterfront,” said Sheehan.
