MBTA Control Board Raises Fares an Average 9.3%

TRANSITBOSTON (AP) — The control board overseeing the Boston-area transit system has voted to raise fares an average 9.3 percent after a chaotic meeting interrupted by protests.

The new fares were unanimously approved Monday by the five-member board and will take effect July 1.

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority officials say the increased fares will raise about $42 million for the cash-strapped system.

The board was poised to vote after nearly two hours of discussion when protesters, many affiliated with the T Riders Union, jumped out of their seats and began chanting loudly.

Board members left the room, but returned after 20 minutes to vote as the noisy protest continued.

State transportation secretary Stephanie Pollack called the disruption unfortunate and noted the board had taken steps to soften the impact of fare hikes on low-income riders.
