MBTA Oversight Board Questions Buzzards Bay Commuter Rail Extension

train2BOSTON – The board charged with oversight of the MBTA may be expressing some reservations about the potential expansion of commuter rail service to Buzzards Bay.

According to a report in the State House News Service Monday, members of the MBTA Fiscal Control Board are skeptical about expanding service from Middleboro to Buzzards Bay given the T’s current financial struggles.

The issue was addressed at the board’s meeting Monday.

Tom Cahir, the Administrator for the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority, said officials were considering a public-private partnership, with a private carrier providing transportation between Buzzards Bay and Middleboro, where riders could then take MBTA service to Boston.

“I’ve have some discussions with folks at the MBTA and MassDOT, and last I heard that’s what they were pursuing,” said Cahir, adding that he has not heard anything about the project in the wake of Monday’s meeting.

MBTA officials are also reportedly cool on a plan to lower weekend fares on the Plymouth line in the hopes of increasing ridership.

The fiscal control board is also considering a pilot program for expanded commuter rail service to Foxboro. T service to Foxboro is only run for certain events at Gillette Stadium.
