McCarthy Gets Endorsement

AP LogoWASHINGTON (AP) — As Republicans prepare to vote today on a new speaker of the House, the front-runner for the post is getting a high-profile endorsement.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney is calling Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California “a good man and a strong leader.” He says McCarthy is “the person we need as speaker in these dangerous and important times.”

Members of a conservative caucus have said they’ll vote instead for congressman Daniel Webster of Florida. While they don’t appear to have the votes to keep McCarthy from getting a majority today, if they stick together on the House floor later this month, they could prevent him from getting the 218 votes he will need. That could boost the ability of the conservatives to set conditions in exchange for their votes
